AS THE COBWEBS OF SLEEP dissipated from his mind, Brent Cole rolled from his side to his back and let out a loud moan. A throbbing pain deep inside of his body dragged him unwillingly from sleep. His head felt as if someone was playing a conga drum inside of it, and the tempo was rapidly escalating. With each surge of pain, his brain threatened to explode. When he moved, it felt as if battery acid was coursing through his veins. As he tried to sit up, he found that he could barely move. It felt as if someone had put weights on top of him. The only noise he could hear was the sound of his pulse roaring through his ears.

Lying still, Brent tried to recap the events of last night. There had to be a reason why he felt as if he had been run over by a tractor trailer. No matter how hard he tried, his memories just wouldn’t cooperate with him. His thoughts were muddled.

He recalled the fruity concoctions he’d had at the last bar and decided they must have been more potent than he realized. This was a mother of all hangovers. That would explain the memory loss and the other symptoms he was experiencing right now. His stomach was queasy, and every muscle in his body hurt. Small currents of electricity coursed through his body. He knew better than to go out drinking last night. He never could hold down his alcohol, and this only proved it.

Now he was paying handsomely for last night’s experience. He rolled over to see the time. He sure hoped he didn’t miss his plane back home. As he rolled over in the bed, panic took over his body. He wasn’t in his hotel room. The surroundings didn’t look familiar. He seemed to be in a small, dark room with only a small bed as furnishings. As he sat up in bed, he winced in pain. He cradled his head, holding onto it as if any minute it would split in two. With every little movement he made, the muscles in his body burned as pain ricocheted through his body.

Maybe, he should lay back down. If he remained perfectly still, perhaps he would eventually feel better. As soon as he lay back down, he slipped back into unconsciousness. The sweet embrace of sleep was the only thing that brought him any comfort, he readily surrendered to it.

When Brent opened his eyes once more, he wondered how long he had been out. His surroundings were still hazy as he clawed his way back to the world of consciousness. As he took in his surroundings, he noticed that his headache was gone. The headache may have left his body, but the queasiness that he experienced earlier was now an unrelenting stomachache. It felt as if a sea of molten lava was churning deep in his abdomen.

He cautiously swallowed down the bile in his throat. His mouth was sour from the acrid taste of sleep.
